The O’Connor Sports Center is Xavier University’s recreational and intramural sports complex. MSA provided design services for renovations based on National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) guidelines. The ultimate goal of the project was to provide better function and usability which included upgrades to the appearance and character of the interior of the building. Exterior building upgrades were generally limited to landscaping, lighting and signage. The primary interior renovation included the lobby, the gymnasium and a fitness area that encompasses weight training, aerobics, cardiovascular training, nautilus. A exterior wall of the new weight area was created on the main level of the building. The exterior wall of the new weight area was opened up with a large expanse of glass to provide substantial day lighting as well as to create greater feelings of openness and connection. As a result, the center became more welcoming, open and active.
