MSA Architects and Motz Engineering were requested to review the existing Taft Theatre for recommendations for possible upgrades and renovations and to provide preliminary conceptual budgets for significant areas of work recommended for the facility. The review was a quick visual overview of the entire facility that were meant to assess the conditions of the existing building and spaces in order to arrive at the general assumptions of new work required to bring the facility to a condition commensurate with other operating facilities of its size.
The walkthroughs revealed that the multi-story, Taft Theatre, located in an urban setting at 317 East Fifth Street, is in generally good condition; however, much of the facility is dated and generally €œworn and would benefit greatly from significant upgrades. In addition, the stage and back-stage functions of the theatre would greatly benefit from infrastructure upgrades, allowing the theatre to be used for varied and current productions. Several major considerations are the condition and adequacy of the HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems; upgrading stage related functions such as rigging, lighting, and systems infrastructure; and the adequacy of support facilities such as restrooms, lobby areas, concessions, and accessibility.
